LUANN FAN: Special News!

Dear Reader,

What a treat to hear from so many of of our LUANN Fans last month! We’re thrilled to share that we were able to include several of your favorite Luann strips—and the wonderful comments you submitted—in the upcoming LUANN exhibit.

Next week, we’ll be in San Diego at the Comic-Con Museum, working with their exhibit team to get everything up on the walls. A few sneak peeks are below, and we’ll be sure to share photos and the official announcement once materials are finalized. (The opening is currently slated for the third week of June!)

We’ve also got some exciting news: We’re honored to be Special Guests at San Diego Comic-Con this year! While we’re always there in person at the National Cartoonists Society booth, being Special Guests means we’ll also be participating in panels—and giving a presentation of our own. We love meeting fans in person, and we can’t wait to see some of you there!

And finally, in a nod to this week's storyline with Bernice and Shannon, we’ve pulled together a collection of strips from Shannon’s first book, Dog and Fish. You can read more about how this storyline came to life—and enjoy the full collection—over at LuannFan.com.

Until next time,

~Karen and Greg

A fish and a dog. A couple of unlikely friends. The wild imagination of a six-year-old. This is how stories begin!

This whimsical storyline was inspired by Karen’s love of children’s books (and her time teaching first grade), combined with Greg’s nostalgia for the early days of LUANN—when the art was simpler and more playful. The result? A charming little tale straight from Shannon’s creative mind.

SO. MUCH. FUN!

We really wanted the LUANN exhibit to be FUN. And, yes, informative. Rather than go chronologically through four decades of the strip, we have themed walls: about the creation and creator, how characters have changed, examples of the heart and humor of the strip, memorable moments and fan engagement, and an interactive option for visitors to write a punchline.

A few things we've learned while developing this exhibit:

"Let's pull some strips showing how characters have changed!" is a fun idea. Going through 14,000+ strips to find what you're looking for, however, is not.

Over the 40 years Greg's been creating LUANN, the size of the dailies and Sunday strips have changed slightly. Why?? To make it a fun challenge to plan out how things will fit and look aesthetically pleasing on a wall. Maybe breaking them up and not putting them in perfect lines will help?

We'll have a "real life" Luann on an interactive wall. So, how big is Puddles in proportion to her? In some strips he's chihuahua size, in others more like a beagle. What the heck breed mashup is he anyway? Here's his size for the Museum exhibit:

Dear Reader, With Halloween around the corner, it's a fun time to imagine what else we could be: not just whether we could have been doctors, but what it would be like to be a dragon, a ghost, or an elven warrior. When he was little, Greg imagined himself as Superman...stoically leaping off the roof of the family's garage...and sloppily landing in a heap below. I, on the other hand, often imagined I was a horse, galloping wild and free all over the playground, pawing the ground and snorting....

Greg and Karen at the NCS Reuben Awards Dear Reader, Fall is in the air and dogs are on our minds, perhaps because Greg and Betty's dog, Charlie, managed to swallow a peach pit and need emergency surgery last month just in time for Betty to miss out on attending the annual National Cartoonists Society's conference and Reuben Awards in Boston. Don't worry, Charlie is 100% a-okay. And we still love pets, as evidenced by our recent storyline in support of Remember Me Thursday which promotes pet...

Dear Reader, What an awesome summer whirlwind we've had: first the LUANN exhibit opening at the Comic-Con Museum, then presenting as Special Guests and seeing fans for five days of Comic-Con, and finally off to Boston for the annual gathering and Reuben Awards with our peers in the National Cartoonists Society. Whew! We are ready to rest...and get caught back up on deadlines! THANK YOU to the fans who came to the Museum and found us at Comic-Con! We love seeing you in person and appreciate...
