LUANN Fan: The Start of Art

Dear Reader,

Wow! Thank you to all the fans who took time last month to share their predictions for 2026--you came up with clever, logical, unexpected, and sweet ideas for the LUANN cast to experience this year. Some ideas have already been on our drawing board, so to speak, so it's good to know we're of a similar mindset!

See more of your predictions below as well as a chance to see Greg in person, this month's Featured Collection, and some of Greg's non-cartoon artwork.

Until next time!

~Karen and Greg

See Greg IN PERSON Sat, Jan 24, 2-4pm

Knowhere Games & Comics in San Marcos, CA

Greg will be showcased alongside talented peers, signing and chatting with fans. He'll have a limited number of items for sale. Come say hello!

This Month's Featured Collection

Exploring the unanswerable question of what is art? has made for fun fodder over the years for Luann and her peers. This month's Featured Collection revisits Luann's first art class with Professor Zebo and fellow students, Nil and Jack--although, fun fact, we didn't actually have names for "the Jock" and "the Goth" figured out yet. Read the collection HERE!

Fan Predictions

LUANN 2026 FAN PREDICTIONS - SURVEY RESULTS SUMMARY

Last month, we invited LUANN Fans to share their 2026 predictions for the Luanniverse. Here's what you told us:

The Overwhelming Favorite: Brad & Toni's Baby

Nearly half of all responses (15 out of 34) predicted Brad and Toni will have a baby in 2026, with several specifically hoping Luann becomes an aunt. One optimistic fan even predicted "of course it's a boy!" Another took a more nuanced approach: "Toni and Brad will decide to try for a baby but will also look into adopting."

The Ox Question: Romance or Rescue?

Readers are deeply invested in Ox's happiness, but divided on the path forward:

  • Team New Girl: "I'd love to see Ox meet a beautiful and caring girl who can bring him out of his shell and help him get over Tiffany. Tiffany is far too shallow for Ox. He deserves better."
  • Team Tiffany: One reader predicted "Ox and Tiffany will start dating"

The passionate plea "Ox finds love and fulfillment, please!" speaks for many fans.

Phil: The Polarizing Boyfriend

Several readers addressed Phil's controversial status head-on: "I predict Luann and Phil will get closer despite that it seems many people dislike him. I think he will come out of his box more giving others a more positive outlook on him." Though one reader nervously added: "I do worry sometimes Bernice will steal him from Luann, but let's hope that doesn't happen."

The Aaron Hill Effect

The most brutally honest prediction? "Aaron Hill makes an appearance, with the sole purpose to flummox Luann and all the readers. Then he will fade into the mist again leaving everyone confused and unfulfilled."

(We see you, and we appreciate your realism.)

Wild Card Predictions Worth Celebrating:

  • Meta Madness: "LUANN attends a comic convention, but it's a convention for comic strip characters! She meets comic strip and comic book characters."
  • Musical Luann: "LUANN takes up music and becomes a drummer. And she's good!"
  • Patriotic Trip: "LUANN travels to Philadelphia to celebrate the semi quincentennial"
  • Puddles & Dash: "A Puddles and Dash interaction cartoon?" (Yes please!)
  • Speed Dating Chaos: "Luann, Bernice and Tiffany end up at a speed dating event"

Other Notable Hopes:

  • Luann and Bernice finally getting their own place
  • Luann studying abroad for a semester
  • Gunther and Bets getting married (if they haven't already)
  • Mrs. Horner passing away (a sobering but realistic prediction)
  • Quill returning: "he was a great boyfriend"

Thank you to everyone who shared their 2026 predictions! Will any come true? We'll see!

The Art of Art

A Note From Greg How does a wanna-be cartoonist become an IS-a-be? Get a degree in Comic Strippery? No. I got a degree in Fine Arts with a secondary teaching credential and taught high school art while I kept wanna-being. I was not a good art teacher because, frankly, teaching hormonal teens about Picasso and pottery and complementary colors seemed pointless. And if you ask me “what is art?” I’d shrug. It’s said that a work of art makes you think, feel and react. But so does grandma’s stew or a clogged toilet. And, to Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, art is a banana taped to a gallery wall (it sold for 6.2 million and I’m in the wrong profession).

I love to draw cartoons and I enjoy painting watercolors. PLUS I have an art DEGREE. So, am I an “artist?” Shrug.

Here’s one of my watercolors. If you’d like to buy it, it’s yours for HALF of what you’d have paid for the banana. A steal.

Dear Reader, Happy end of the year—and happy New Year, too! As they say, the days are long but the years are short, and 2025 was no exception. For many of us, it felt packed to the brim (or well over the brim), so we hope this transition into 2026 brings a little breathing room, a little brightness, and plenty to smile about. We hope your days were lightened along the way by Luann and the whole cast of characters. Here’s a look back at (almost) all they got up to this past year. Cheers to our...

Dear Reader, As we head into the busiest stretch of the holiday season, we're taking a moment to pause and say thank you. This month brought Greg's birthday and an outpouring of kind messages that reminded us how lucky we are to share the Luann universe with all of you. Whether you've been reading since 1985 or just discovered the strip, we're grateful you're here. Grab your cocoa (or eggnog!) and settle in for this month's newsletter with holiday-themed Sunday strips, a sweet reader story,...

Dear Reader, With Halloween around the corner, it's a fun time to imagine what else we could be: not just whether we could have been doctors, but what it would be like to be a dragon, a ghost, or an elven warrior. When he was little, Greg imagined himself as Superman...stoically leaping off the roof of the family's garage...and sloppily landing in a heap below. I, on the other hand, often imagined I was a horse, galloping wild and free all over the playground, pawing the ground and snorting....
