LUANN FAN: Growing Up Luann

Dear Reader,

It’s open!! Today we had the great honor and fun of seeing the exhibit “Growing Up Luann, 40 years of the Luanniverse” open at the San Diego Comic-Con Museum. After months of planning, prep, and some unexpected bumps along the way, we are incredibly proud and grateful to say IT TURNED OUT FANTASTIC! See pics and a video tour below as well as a list of all the fans whose favorites made it into the display. The exhibit will be open through the fall so if you have the chance to come visit, please do! The Museum has several other interesting exhibits you can explore too: Dr. Who, lucha libre, tokidoki and more.

Also launched this month: our in-depth interview recorded as part of California State University San Marcos’ Campus and Communities oral history project. You can watch the interview or read the full transcript here. Our family has been connected to the San Marcos community, including the University, for decades. Being included in this archival project was a meaningful experience and an extra honor for us. Plus, we are wearing matching shirts!

Next month: San Diego Comic Con! Lots of news to share about that too, but we’ll save it for next time 😊

Until next time,

~Karen and Greg

This is Greg's favorite storyline of all time and the one he is most proud of. Written in 1991, these strips broke ground by thoughtfully, openly, and optimistically telling the story of Luann's first period. While Greg did have to prepare an alternative storyline for a few newspapers who opted not to run this "controversial" story, the overwhelming feedback from readers was positive and grateful.

And to the fans below whose kind and clever messages about the strip are included too!

“I think every girl and woman can relate to Luann; as we’ve watched her grow, learn, develop and experience both joy and heartache, throughout the years. It’s been such a pleasure seeing her evolve. And as someone named Luanna, and often called Luann, I definitely feel a special connection!” - Luanna O., Lewiston, NY

“My daughter & son, age 48 & 46, started out as fans of Maxwell the Robot. When Luann debuted, we have seen the parallels between our two children and those of Luann & Brad. Greg & Karen keep up the great work.” - Dennis G., Escondido, CA

“I have been a fan since the beginning. I was 18 at the time, I had a younger sister that was my “Brad” and the same insecurities and curly hair that drew me to the strip. It has been fun watching her grow up, change her look and relate to people at a much slower pace than I have been allowed. Somedays I still feel stuck at that age and after all these years I still get her way of thinking. Thank you” - Melissa Y., Indianapolis, IN

“I really like the relationship between Luann and Bernice. Reminds me of my best and me. No matter how bad things get, you always have each other.” - Barbara H.

“Luann always starts my day on a happy note! My subscription to the local newspaper is for one reason only - to get the comics to read Luann. She is such a sweet young woman and never disappoints her readers. We should all be like her.” - Kathy D, Farmington, MI

“I am a fan of LUANN because, my name is LuAnn and my younger brother is named Brad. He is a retired firefighter. I was shocked when the comic strip showed that Brad wanted to be a firefighter after 9/11. What a coincidence! My brother had wanted to be a firefighter since he was 5. My parents even bought him a riding firetruck when he was little. My brother also endlessly teased me growing up. We have quite a laugh about all the things that happen in the comic strip between the siblings.” - LuAnn K., Hillsboro, OR

“Great storytelling requires tension to make it compelling reading, and Greg and Karen are masters of generating tension and conflict in their daily comic strip - perhaps the shortest form of storytelling. The relationships of the characters are always showered with real human emotions and humor. With numerous relationships to keep up with, I love anticipating the episodic evolution of them all. I’m 77 and have watched Luann grow up. Right now, I’m hoping to see whether Luann and Phil will eventually become engaged. That storyline could be stretched for a long time - would be fun to see these two quirky people get serious. But then, every time I think I know (or hope for) the direction in which a storyline is headed, I’m often surprised by something I didn’t expect. That’s what makes reading LUANN fun.” - Ken L., Denver, CO

“My father wanted me to be named Lulu, but my mother hated that name and suggested a compromise of Luanna. When my mother told the nurse the name for the birth certificate, the nurse typed LuAnn (Mom said it was God’s will.) I have had to deal with people misspelling and mispronouncing (“you mean Joann?”) my name for 71 years. I was thrilled to see a comic with my name - even if it is spelled differently. The stories are relatable and fun. Thank you.” - LuAnn HS, Pocono Mtns, PA

“I started reading the strip when I was 8. Luann and her circle were in high school and hit college around the same years I did. I liked reading these older characters as a kid, then slowly caught up to their experiences in my own life.” - Parker L, San Diego, CA “I’ve been reading LUANN since about the 90s, and I can so relate to the main character. Like Luann, I had a huge crush on a boy named Aaron (different last name, though), in addition to being boy-crazy in general. Although Luann DeGroot and some of the other characters annoy me at times, I still enjoy reading the strip because the characters are so relatable. There is hardly a storyline that someone out there has not been able to relate to.” - Veronica A., McAllen, TX

“Last year, I started reading Luann for the first time, and I really enjoy it. If I had to choose my favorite character, I’d have to say Luann herself. She’s basically how I was in middle school, except that my room was always clean and never dirty.” - Melody S., Clarksburg, MD

“I am a huge LUANN fan and I have been following the strip for just over a year. I don’t necessarily relate to the characters but it’s the situations that I can relate. I also save the strips to my LUANN Photo Album. I love Tiffany, Stef, TJ, Toni and of course Luann.” - David L., Reading, PA
